It’s certainly true that we never truly stop learning, there’s always something or someone new to learn from. But are you learning from your data and analytics?

We’ve had great success in the four cohorts currently running of Driven By Data: The Mentorship, we’re now gearing up for the fifth cohort in September.

Earlier this week I caught up with one of the upcoming mentors for the 5th cohort in September, Ben Day, Data & Analytics Director at financial service company Saga, and we discussed the benefits of having a great mentor, and the pitfalls of working with a bad one.

With our Driven by Data community, we believe it’s important to be working and supporting the best people. We personally connect with each mentor to ensure they are a valuable and positive addition to each cohort, and also have the time commitment required to be a great mentor!

We have a great value proposition for mentors, including virtual meetups to meet other mentors in the cohort, pushing their profiles to our wider following and hosting their profiles on our website. Mentees get the chance to connect with senior data leaders that would’ve otherwise been out of reach and can find the right person to help them achieve their specific goals.

If you’re someone that hasn’t benefitted from or even considered engaging in any kind of mentorship program, it’s important to understand how much value there is on both sides. Here are some of the most popular reasons for wanting to find a mentor.

Project & Challenge advice

As we’re approaching a time when the market is gradually opening back up and budgets for projects and talent are being put into action, you may be embarking on a new adventure within the business. Whether it’s building a new data platform from scratch, modernizing tech from a legacy set up or moving everything into the cloud, it helps to have the advice of a mentor that has successfully accomplished what you’re trying to achieve. Knowing the mistakes to avoid and where the quick wins can be had goes a long way to ensuring you’re successful.

New Job

With the pace of the current data and analytics landscape, people of all seniorities are changing their job routinely every few years. If you’ve had a long tenure in one business, it can be daunting to make the jump having become accustomed to the workings of that singular business. Every business is at different stages of its data maturity, so it’s vital you know what the business is going to expect from you. With the help of a mentor and their outside perspective, it becomes easier to understand how your skillset and experience will fit.

Career Move

Making the leap to the next level of your career is a decision that you’ll have to navigate multiple times, with each one presenting a new challenge. By connecting with a mentor that has been there and gone through the same experience, they can advise you where your focus should be to present yourself as the right individual for the role. With each discipline in the world of data and analytics presenting unique challenges, it’s important to connect with someone that has the specific background that you’re looking to emulate.
