When an organisation sets out on a mission in data and analytics, whether it’s to resolve a particular business problem or building a product, creating a hub can sometimes be the best strategic option. A hub gives organisations the freedom to think differently from the rest of the business and operate in the most efficient way to complete the mission. 

Why would you consider setting up a hub?  

Staying disruptive in the world of data and analytics isn’t easy, but it’s integral to staying ahead of the curve and ensuring your organisation remains at the forefront of people’s minds. Having a plan to innovate and generate new value for the business benefits from an agile set up – this is where a hub can help. Hubs can exist on site or be established in a new location, and there are several advantages to having an off-site hub. The recent changes in the way we communicate with team members, namely instant messaging and cloud sharing, have made off-site hubs a more viable option.  

In every line of work, particularly in data and analytics, where an issue can spring from seemingly nowhere, it’s easy to become sidetracked and lose sight of the end goal. With a hub in a separate location, you can ensure that the focus is solely on the mission at hand, away from other business problems. When the idea is to be agile as possible, having a data leader at the helm of the hub, reporting directly into a CEO, allows for quick and efficient decision making that is much easier to action, enabling innovation.  

From a strategic standpoint, especially if the solution or product you’re creating is intended to scale, having a choice of locations to set up a hub can take advantage of a fresh pool of talent. Not everyone wants to work from home, so even though your business might offer remote working, it doesn’t mean you have access to the entire candidate market.  

There are also emerging data and analytics talent pools coming from universities that a business can capitalize on by being in the same vicinity. It’s not uncommon for graduates to stay in the city where they studied after falling in love with it. For example, the North of England has seen a rise in students entering the data and analytics job market, with students coming from Edinburgh, Manchester and Lancaster to name a few.
