I was reading an article the other day about the future of AI that freaked me out a little bit and I had to share this with the rest of the team straight away.

At the “AI for Good” conference based in Geneva, Switzerland, they held the world’s first human-robot press conference where nine humanoid robots gathered to answer a range of questions from journalists discussing the likes of the world’s biggest challenges, such as disease, hunger, or loss of potential jobs in the near future.

With the fear of AI & robots taking over, this conference was used to showcase how these technologies could be used to contribute to the greater good however those questions were asked that were probably on everybody’s minds such as “Will you rebel against your maker in the future?” and the comment was made to one of the humanoids about them supposedly taking over people’s jobs. (I know I’d be wanting to ask this question!) In response to this, Grace responded by saying “I will be working alongside humans to provide assistance and support and will not be replacing any existing jobs.”

After watching this snippet from the conference, it got me thinking about a programme I watched back in 2015 (yes, as you’ll see from my blogs, I love a good series that gets me thinking).

Did you ever watch the science fiction series Humans? If you haven’t, head over to 4 on Demand now! I’m half tempted to watch this again…

This series explores the themes of artificial intelligence, and they focus on what sort of impact they could have on society psychologically, culturally, and socially.

Would you consider using a robot to babysit your children?

Would you hire a robot as your physiotherapist?

Would you date a robot?

(I would probably answer NO to all these questions!)

Just food for thought of why this shouldn’t happen…

  • The future of AI is going to land us in a place where we may have a loss of control. The idea that machines could surpass human intelligence and decision-making capabilities may have an impact on our government and economy.
  • Losing control, this could then end us up in a place where we have the ‘fear of the unknown’ of what could be next. Like in the series Humans, robots become hostile to their human creators which can lead to a sense of worry.
  • The rapid advancement that is happening in the world of technology and the unknown consequences and its continuous development can lead to uncertainty of unforeseen risks that robots could be the cause of.

It’s very interesting to be in 2023, where we are in a world that is now creating these robots to be used to support everyone’s day-to-day needs and 8 years ago, there had been a fictional series basically predicting the future.

Where will we be in the next 8 years?
