Utilising data to make talent decisions is something that every company should be doing. It’s so important to plan thoroughly when choosing a location to hire top data and analytics talent. Most organizations we speak to that are struggling to hire in D&A only consider how many candidates there are before deciding on a location.

Are you truly data-driven when it comes to your D&A talent strategy?

The conversation sounds like this, “Are there data people there? Yes! Great let’s put out a job advert”

Unfortunately, you may end up in a battle for the best candidates with some of your biggest competitors, find a lack of diverse talent, or be asked for salaries you weren’t prepared to pay.

It is ironic, that at the conferences I attend, data leaders from all industries and verticals shout about being data-driven, yet when it comes to hiring there are very few data-driven decisions being made.

For example, let’s say you’re looking for a location to develop a Data Engineering function on the West Coast of the US, what metrics should you consider before choosing a location to hire in?

Let’s compare California & Washington State.

No. of Candidates

  • California – 17,000
  • Washington – 6400

The ratio of available candidates: (current live job vacancies)

  • California 1.7: 1
  • Washington 3.2: 1

Current average salary

  • California $181,200
  • Washington $140,000

So, from just these 3 criteria, we can see that hiring in California will not only be more difficult, but it will also cost substantially more! Due to there being 1.7 candidates for every job vacancy, it’s going to be considerably harder to stand out in comparison to Washington’s 3.2 candidates per job vacancy.

We understand this data isn’t readily available for everyone, which is why we have invested heavily in our own insights into the global talent market. We can also provide insights into Gender split, experience breakdown, and which education institutes are producing the most talent, amongst much more!
