I don’t think a single executive is off the market, especially in the data space. Some are much happier in their current positions than others (as shown by our recent research). Yet truthfully, even the happiest CDO with a compelling enough offer could be tempted away. The market is however full of people who are actively open to new roles, which means it’s rather saturated.

Here at Orbition Group, we’re asked daily how aspiring CDOs can ‘stand out’ from the crowd. The positive part about asking this question is the subconscious acknowledgement that 1) there is a crowd, and 2) it’s up to you as an individual to work to elevate yourself above the rest. Gone are the days of your work doing your talking and that being enough. In 2024 you must take an active role, both internally within your organisation and externally in promoting your work and most importantly your value. For some, this is an entirely new and uncomfortable prospect. Fear not! I am going to share some ways to break this down into simple achievable actions.

Optimise Your Online Presence

In today’s digital age, your online presence can speak volumes about your credibility and professionalism. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date, polished, and optimised with relevant keywords and skills that showcase your expertise. Additionally, why not consider creating a LinkedIn blog where you can share insights, thought leadership pieces, or case studies related to data and analytics? Engage with industry-related content on social media platforms to demonstrate your knowledge and stay connected with peers and potential employers.

Network Strategically

Networking is a powerful tool for expanding your professional circle and uncovering new opportunities. Attend industry events, conferences, and meetups to connect with other data professionals, thought leaders, and potential employers. Don’t underestimate the value of building genuine relationships and staying in touch with your network. Keep an updated list of contacts and try to reach out periodically to catch up and share updates on your career. It’s also worth noting who you network with is of vital importance, depending on your overall goal. If you want to get hired, network with those who make those decisions (e.g. CEO). If you want to upskill and surround yourselves with people who know more about that subject matter than you, network with industry peers.

Actively Demonstrate Thought Leadership

Position yourself as a thought leader in the field of data and analytics by sharing your insights and expertise through various channels. Consider writing articles or whitepapers on relevant topics, speaking at industry conferences or webinars, or participating in panel discussions. By contributing valuable content and sharing your perspective on key issues facing the industry, you can establish yourself as a go-to expert and increase your visibility among hiring managers and recruiters. In 2024, people want to be given value, and if you can provide that it puts you in such a strong position.

Seek Out Mentorship and Professional Development Opportunities

Continuous learning and growth are essential for staying ahead in the rapidly evolving field of data and analytics. Seek out mentorship from seasoned professionals who can offer guidance, support, and valuable insights based on their own experiences. Additionally, invest in professional development opportunities such as online courses, certifications, or workshops to expand your skill set and stay current with industry trends and best practices.

Be Proactive in Your Job Search

Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you—be proactive in your job search efforts. Reach out to recruiters and hiring managers directly to express your interest in potential opportunities and inquire about upcoming roles, chances are the role you want will never actually be externally advertised and it will be filled via an executive search. Looping back to the importance of networking, most CDOs find their roles by being ‘in-the-know’ of opportunities arising and being prepared for them, rather than the more traditional route of applying for a job, submitting a CV and cover letter etc.

Stay Flexible and Open-Minded

In a competitive and saturated job market, it’s important to stay flexible and open-minded about potential opportunities. Be willing to consider roles that may not align perfectly with your previous experience or expectations, as they could provide valuable learning experiences and opportunities for growth. Keep an open dialogue with recruiters and hiring managers and be prepared to adapt your job search strategy based on feedback and market trends.

Hopefully, by following these top tips and staying committed to showcasing your expertise and passion for data, you can position yourself as a highly sought-after candidate and stand out among the competition!
