Eva Murray, Lead Evangelist EMEA, Snowflake

Eva Murray has been with Snowflake for 2 years now as Lead Evangelist, EMEA, where she has the duty of getting in front of audiences and on stage talking about data literacy and culture which she loves. Prior to this, Eva worked in different organisations in roles including strategic enablement, consulting, and business analysis in Germany, Australia, and New Zealand.

As part of our ongoing celebration of International Women’s Day, we sat down with senior leaders from our community to ask them how they found themselves in the world of data, and what advice they have for others.

How and Why did you get into the Data industry?

Eva claims her journey into Data was ‘accidental.’ After completing a Degree in Psychology, HR & Accounting, she intended to do HR-focused Consulting. However, Deloitte gave her the opportunity to go into IT. She really got stuck into the projects, enjoyed the work, and thrived, which was how she then discovered the exciting world of data, data visualization, and analytics, and the rest is History!

What advice would you give to a college or Uni leaver considering a career in Data?

Eva stresses that showing up as a person who is authentic is a great asset to team culture; being curious and inquisitive always helps in this industry. The main advice Eva gave was to be a good listener, if you can take complex things and break them down, this is a great skill to have. Furthermore, Eva pointed out that technical skills are important but don’t ignore soft skills.

How has being a female leader impacted your journey within the data industry?

Eva described her journey as ‘mixed’ and elaborated that she is aware of things that can still be improved, but, she has been fortunate to have had really great leaders who have supported and mentored her. Eva also believes she has made an effort to work well with male colleagues in the industry, in order to prevent gender from standing in her way. Eva is passionate about leading “for other women” so that in the future our younger generation of women don’t have the same hurdles. She strongly feels contributing, even just being ‘seen’ at events, will help.

What could be done better in the Data industry to attract more females to a career in Data?

Eva Murray pointed out that the industry should make women already within the data space more visible. She goes on to say that it is mainly men we see on social media, she believes that women are there too, but need to be showcased more, as they are currently less visible. Eva also adds that the industry should highlight that data isn’t just tech roles; people often think you need to be a Techy person to work in a techy company, but there’s more than just tech.
